Getting Involved
The Safer Drinking Spaces Study examines how active bystander training can help alcohol-serving venues recognize, respond to, and prevent situations that may lead to sexual violence.
Safer Drinking Spaces Study (SDSS) is a study designed to evaluate an active bystander training program in several U.S. communities with a particular emphasis on community-level strategies and outcomes.
For Potential Venues
The study team requests your help identifying places to conduct the study. Good study locations have:
- Many drinking venues, ideally spread across multiple neighborhoods
- Venues interested in Safe Bars training but have not yet (or not recently) been trained
- Sexual violence prevention and response coalitions or organizations that can serve as local study champions
Your organization’s role may include:
- Providing Safe Bars active bystander training (as a chapter)
- Sharing study information with venues in your community
- Suggesting professionals to join the Research Advisory Board to help ensure the study fits community needs
- Study Participation
This study is being done in multiple places across the United States. The study will kick off in Virginia.
The study is 12 months long. Taking part in this study is voluntary. Participants can choose to stop taking part at any time.
- All participants must be 18 years of age and be able to read and write in English.
- Both participating venues and their patrons are involved in the intervention.
