Approach
The Safer Drinking Spaces Study examines how active bystander training can help alcohol-serving venues recognize, respond to, and prevent situations that may lead to sexual violence.
Safer Drinking Spaces Study (SDSS) is a study designed to evalaluate an active bystander training program in several U.S. communities with a particular emphases on community-level strategies and outcomes.
The study team requests your help identifying places to conduct the study. Good study locations have:
- Many drinking venues, ideally spread across multiple neighborhoods
- Venues interested in Safe Bars training but have not yet (or not recently) been trained
- Sexual violence prevention and response coalitions or organizations that can serve as local study champions
Your organization’s role may include:
- Providing Safe Bars active bystander training (as a chapter)
- Sharing study information with venues in your community
- Suggesting professionals to join the Research Advisory Board to help ensure the study fits community needs
- Study Participation
This study is being done in multiple places across the United States. The study will kick off in Virginia.
We do not expect this study to present any more risk than experienced in day-to-day life. Some sections of the survey will focus on personal topics that may make participants feel uncomfortable (e.g., sexual violence, victimization). Participants are free to refuse to answer any questions and all answers are confidential.
The study is 12 months long. Taking part in this study is voluntary. Participants can choose to stop taking part at any time.
