UF Online has risen to No. 5 in the 2019 rankings by U.S. News & World Report for the best online programs in the country, up from No. 12 in 2018. This ranking includes the College of Health & Human Behavior online bachelor degrees in Health Education and Behavior, and Sport Management.
With support from NASA and the National Space Biomedical Research Institute, APK's Dr. Rachael Seidler is studying the effects of spaceflight on the human brain — specifically the impact on white matter in areas that control movement and process sensory information.
On March 19, HHP hosted the 34th annual D.K. Stanley Lecture Series featuring noted Stanford professor of psychiatry and the behavioral sciences and former Obama administration senior drug control policy advisor, Dr. Keith Humphreys. His presentation “Effective Strategies for Responding to the Opioid Crisis” discussed multiple strategies and tactics that have some effectiveness in reducing the opioid epidemic and associated harms. On Monday, March 4, President Fuchs and Vice President Jodi Gentry celebrated staff legacies at the University of Florida with 25 years or more of service. The College of Health & Human Performance has eight staff members with 25 years and counting.
With his recent laboratory discovery, Dr. Vaillancourt, professor and researcher at HHP in the Applied Physiology and Kinesiology department, is poised to transform how Parkinson’s disease is diagnosed and monitored — and maybe even cured one day.
The first “Stand-Up and Holler: Gator Nation Giving Day” was held on Tuesday, February 26, 2019. On this day, Gators from around the world donated to various causes across UF and in support of the College of Health & Human Performance.

On Monday, April 8, Brittany Schambow, academic advisor in the Department of Health Education & Behavior, was selected as UF’s Professional Advisor of the Year. This award is a testament to Schambow’s outstanding student advising and commitment to professional development.
Earlier in April, the university celebrated Graduate Student Appreciation Week with a university-wide research day and awards ceremony. Congratulations to six graduate students recognized for outstanding mentoring, teaching and research.
On Monday, April 15, HHP hosted “Transparency: Physiology, Wellness and Beyond in the Trans Community.” The event featured student presentations on physiological changes during the medical transition process. Presenters from Dr. Joslyn Ahlgren’s human physiology class responded to questions posed by faculty judges and members of the community. Attendees had the opportunity to learn new information shared by LGBTQ advocates and take this knowledge forward into professional careers and other opportunities.
In collaboration with Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, HHP welcomed elementary school students for an immersive biomechanics experience featuring 10 labs and four departments.

On April 12, 2019, Robert Leeman, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Health Education & Behavior, was named the inaugural Mary F. Lane Endowed Professor which will be housed in HHP in perpetuity.
On Sunday, May 5, the College of Health & Human Performance recognized degree recipients in the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. Dean Michael Reid, Ph.D., presided over the ceremony for Spring 2019 graduates in the departments of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology; Health Education and Behavior; Sport Management; and Tourism, Event and Recreation Management.
Robert “Bob” Singer, Ph.D., retired chair of HHP’s Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology (formerly Exercise and Sport Sciences), passed away peacefully on Monday, May 20, 2019, at the age of 82.
In partnership with the Walt Disney World Company, the University of Florida’s College of Health & Human Performance now offers an expanded selection of online master’s degrees to Disney employees. Master’s degrees in Tourism and Recreation Management, Applied Physiology and Kinesiology and Health Education and Behavior will join the Bachelor of Science in Sport Management as online degrees eligible for 100 percent tuition coverage under Disney Aspire.
Amy R. Mobley, Ph.D., associate professor and graduate coordinator in the Department of Health Education & Behavior, received the Nutrition Education and Behavioral Science RIS Mid-Career Award supported by Abbott Nutrition.
This summer, Dr. David Vaillancourt moves into his new role as the Applied Physiology & Kinesiology department chair. He joined UF and APK in 2011, and in addition to the role of professor, Vaillancourt served as director of the Center for Exercise Science and vice-chair for the department.
This summer, Dr. Mildred Maldonado-Molina joins HHP as the new Health Education & Behavior department chair. She comes to the college from the Department of Health Outcomes & Biomedical Informatics at the UF College of Medicine where she is an Associate Professor and Director of the Family Data Center.

Congratulations to Holly Moses, Ph.D., lecturer and internship coordinator in health education and behavior. Dr. Moses was one of two winning the faculty division in the inaugural UF Career Influencer Awards hosted by the Career Connections Center on Friday, July 19, 2019.
In addition to Moses, two additional HHP faculty members received nominations.
Congratulations to Scott Powers, Ed.D., UAA endowed and distinguished professor in APK, for receiving the 2019 Honor Award from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) at their annual meeting in Orlando, Florida in June.

In an international study at 17 MRI centers in the U.S., Austria and Germany, a research team led by HHP's David Vaillancourt, Ph.D., used a non-invasive MRI method with 1,002 patients to develop an automated system to accurately diagnose Parkinson’s disease and related but different neurodegenerative disorders.

The Women’s Tennis Association and Women’s Tennis Benefit Association announced a partnership with the University of Florida, where WTBA will subsidize in-state tuition fees for WTA members who enroll in online master’s degrees from the UF College of Journalism and Communications and the UF College of Health & Human Performance. The WTA, headquartered in St. Petersburg, Florida, is the global leader in women’s professional sport and the principal organizing body for women's professional tennis.
The article, “Perceived health, medical and psychiatric conditions in individual and dual-use of marijuana and nonprescription opioids,” by Tessa Frohe, Beseler, Mendoza, Cottler and Leeman, was published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, vol. 87, issue 10, pp. 859-871 this month.
On Nov. 12, ESPN’s The Undefeated and University of Florida hosted the 2019 Wasdin Town Hall on sport, social justice and the media with 17 sports professionals and speakers. The event was a collaborative effort between the College of Health and Human Performance, the College of Journalism and Communications and the Levin College of Law.

Using drone technology, a team of UF researchers including HHP’s assistant professor in the Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management Angélica Almeyda Zambrano, Ph.D., discovered how an ancient Floridian village played a key role in pre-Columbian geopolitics. Their findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and have been featured in The Guardian.
