Joseph Wasser, an accomplished graduate of the University of Florida College of Health & Human Performance, graduated in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in applied physiology and kinesiology. Currently residing in Gaithersburg, Maryland, he serves as a Deputy Program Area Manager for the Defense Health Agency, a joint, integrated combat support agency that provides medical services to the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force.

Joseph’s passion lies in contributing to the improvement of military medicine. In his role, he oversees and supports injury prevention and treatment projects. What he finds most fulfilling is engaging with diverse and innovative research methodologies. Acting as a liaison among primary investigators, Joseph witnesses the collective impact of evidence-based interventions on the well-being of service members. The dynamic nature of this work, coupled with its direct impact on military health, keeps him intellectually stimulated.

His journey began while working as a research scientist at a major military medical center. Recruited through professional networks, Joseph embraced the challenge of aligning his interests with the focus of injury prevention and treatment projects. His dedication led to his current position, where he continues to make a difference in the lives of service members.

Joseph credits his college education for shaping his career. His studies in APK provided a strong foundation in exercise science, equipping him with essential knowledge and critical-thinking skills. Additionally, pursuing his Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Florida, has allowed him to specialize further, enhancing his ability to contribute effectively to research projects.

To graduating seniors, Joseph offers valuable advice: embrace career challenges/discomforts, prioritize self-care and learn from failures. These principles have guided his impactful journey in military medicine.
