Christine Wegner, Ph.D., has been named as incoming director of the Institute for Coaching Excellence, effective May 16. As director, she will lead an entity whose mission is to promote holistic and sustainable athlete development and success through athlete-centered coaching environments on and off the field of play, and in life after sports.

Dr. Wegner is an instructional assistant professor in the Department of Sport Management and her research focuses on sport for social change and ways to engage marginalized communities in sport. In addition to her years at UF, she has varied teaching and coaching experiences. She taught elementary school in New York City Public Schools, where she started an after-school basketball program. Dr. Wegner also served as assistant coach for the Vassar women’s basketball team before coaching in Japan as part of the Japanese Exchange and Teaching Program.

The Institute for Coaching Excellence was founded in 2022 by outgoing director Michael Sagas, Ed.D., professor of sport management. Dr. Sagas will be departing UF to serve as dean of the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management at the University of South Carolina.

“Congratulations to both Dr. Wegner and Dr. Sagas,” said George Cunningham, UAA Endowed Professor and chair of the Department of Sport Management. “We’re grateful for the tremendous contributions of Dr. Sagas for his role founding the institute and excited for the future under Dr. Wegner’s leadership.”
