The “Cameron Crazies” is the moniker given to the 1200 Duke students who attend home games for the men’s basketball team. They are widely known for their passionate and intense support of the men’s program.

What, though, drives their behavior? Could it be team success, the continued tradition of fandom, or the entertainment value of the games as a whole?

Recently, Yong Jae Ko, of the University of Florida Department of Sport Management, and colleagues sought to determine the impact of holistic entertainment on attendance of college basketball fans at both men’s and women’s games.

The researchers collected data from 600 spectators total of both men’s and women’s college basketball games.

Ko and collaborators found that non-dedicated spectators were more likely to attend games again if the entertainment and service values were deemed to be gratifying. While this mattered to dedicated fans of the teams as well, entertainment is much more important for those who consider themselves neutral about the team.

Results further indicate that non-dedicated fans of men’s basketball games, relative to their more committed counterparts, were more likely to attend again if the team performed well in comparison to devoted supporters.

Conversely, committed fans of women’s basketball were more likely to repeat their attendance if the team performed well, while non-dedicated fans were less influenced by achievement.

“In-game entertainment was a critical event quality factor of revisit intentions” according to researchers.

The research shows that, whether focusing on the Duke student section or other college basketball fans, the quality of the event plays an important role.
