Establishing a career identity for adulthood is essential for one's career and psychosocial functioning. Not surprisingly, the topic has garnered considerable academic interest.

As one example, researchers created the Career Identity Development Inventory (CIDI) to help understand how people pass through different career stages. The inventory also addresses career identity crises and how people negotiate them.

A recent study conducted by Drs. Elodie Wendling and Michael Sagas examined whether and how CIDI can be used to determine individuals’ career identity statuses.

The research team focused on career exploration and career commitment. They collected data from 410 college graduates who have gained their bachelor’s degrees.

The participants responded to a questionnaire measuring their career identity and various psychological measures. The latter included assessments of their flourishing, career satisfaction, life satisfaction, and how they think about themselves.

Results showed that the college graduates varied in their career identities and development – variations that shaped other outcomes. For example, people who were committed to their careers and had previously explored different option but were not now also reported high levels of satisfaction with their career and life. They also reported leading a meaningful life.

Together, the findings show how people’s careers and their personal wellbeing are closely linked. Career counselors and managers can use this information to help people find meaning with their work, as doing so will help both the workplace and employees.
