James Barfield
Senior, Sport Management Major
Transferred from University of Alabama Birmingham (Birmingham, AL)
Why did you choose to enroll at UF?
I grew up in North Florida and have always loved the Florida Gators. I moved to North Alabama as a young adult and have worked as a welder for 25 years. Attending UF always seemed unimaginable until I met my wife, Monica. She encouraged me to further my education. I obtained my associate’s degree in general studies from Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, AL. I then enrolled at UAB to pursue a degree in business management. My wife's career as a Nurse Practitioner led us to Florida. She then encouraged me to transfer to UF. Believing this dream would never come true, I was in tears when I received my acceptance.
Why did you choose to major in HHP?
Upon transferring to UF, I decided if I was going to chase my dream to graduate from UF, I should pursue a degree I was truly passionate about. Therefore, I changed my major to Sport Management. I have always loved coaching and decided I would pursue sport management from the best sports program, UF (in my opinion).
What do you enjoy most about being a student at UF?
Honestly, being able to say I attend UF and will officially be a part of the greatest university in the country. Most importantly, achieving something no one can take away from me – becoming a GATOR!
What has made your student experience unique?
Being an online student. I have not had a typical student experience. However, I attend all home football games and enjoy visiting HHP.
What are your post-graduation plans?
I have recently been offered the welding instructor position at the local high school as well as the Varsity Girls Basketball Coach. Upon graduation, I hope to be a candidate for the Athletic Director position one day.
What academic/professional accomplishments do you wish to share?
I was inducted into the NSLS while attending UF!
