Congratulations to Daniel Connaughton, Ed.D., professor in the Department of Sport Management, recipient of the 2021 Betty van der Smissen Leadership Award by the Sport and Recreation Law Association (SRLA). The award is presented to an individual who is recognized for leadership and vision in the study of legal aspects of sport and physical activity. Dr. Connaughton will be honored during the 2021 SRLA Conference awards ceremony on Friday, February 26.
The Sport and Recreation Law Association (SRLA) aims to further the study and dissemination of information regarding legal aspects of sport and recreation. The Association addresses legal aspects of sport and recreation within both the public and private sectors.
For more than 25 years, Dr. Connaughton’s research has focused on the study of law and risk management in sport and physical activity programs. His findings have had implications for influencing policy, improving risk management practices, and decreasing injuries, fatalities and liability. Dr. Connaughton has been funded by the American Heart Association, Florida Department of Transportation and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The author of many publications, he has received several teaching and research awards.
Dr. Connaughton will be honored along with Sungwon Kim, an HHP alumnus who earned his Ph.D. under Dr. Connaughton’s guidance. Dr. Kim will receive the Lori K. Miller Sport and Recreation Law Association Young Professional Award recognizing a young professional who demonstrates commitment to the study and instruction of the legal aspects of sport and recreation. Dr. Kim is an assistant professor of sport management at St. John’s University in Queens, New York.
