Patricia M. Tripp, Ph.D., has been elected president of the Athletic Trainers’ Association of Florida.


Christopher D. Brown, Ph.D., has been elected secretary of the Athletic Trainers’ Association of Florida.

Chris Hass elected fellow to the National Academy of Kinesiology
The NAK encourages and promotes the study and educational applications of the art and science of human movement and physical activity and to honor by election to its membership persons who have directly or indirectly contributed significantly to the study of and/or application of the art and science of human movement and physical activity. Chris Hass, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Applied Physiology & Kinesiology, serves as the associate provost for Academic and Faculty Affairs.



HEB alum Shayne Rodney accepts position at UF Health Shands Hospital
As trauma, injury prevention & outreach coordinator, Rodney assess safety problems in local communities to help inform outreach, education and policy changes.

Michelle Smith Receives Multicultural & Diversity Affairs "MCDA Director's Award"
The Inclusive Excellence Awards recognize and celebrate the efforts of individuals, departments and groups who display exceptional leadership in fostering diversity and inclusion both on campus and in the surrounding Gainesville community. Michelle Smith, JD, is the assistant dean for incusion in HHP and the Levin College of Law.



National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Recognizes APK Programs 
 Many thanks to Joslyn Ahlgren, Ph.D., and Blain Harrison, Ph.D., for their efforts. The NSCA Education Recognition Program recognizes and distinguishes schools with strength and conditioning or personal training curricula that prepares students for certification exams.


Felix-Antoine Savoie Awarded Postdoctoral Fellowship
APK graduate student Felix-Antoine Savoie accepted a two-year Canadian Postdoctoral Fellowship (mentors: Stephen Coombes, Ph.D., and David Vaillancourt, Ph.D.).



Orlando Laitano accepts FSU faculty position
Graduate student Orlando Laitano from APK's Muscle Stress Physiology Lab has accepted an assistant professor position at Florida State University.



Juhan Lee Receives College on Problems of Drug Dependence Award for Early-Career Investigators
HEB doctoral student Juhan "John" Lee received the travel award for early career investigators at the 2020 College on Problems of Drug Dependence annual meeting. The awardees will be announced during the virtual conference, and his research presentations will be highlighted.



Dave Straley named to 30-UNDER-30 Class of 2020
Sport Management alum Dave Straley, who is an event coordinator at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center, was recently recognized by the International Association of Venue Managers.



Julia Choi, Steve Coombes and Amy Mobley Awarded Mowery Innovative Research Initiative Fellowships
The investment in HHP from Art Mowery, BSESS '91 DMD '96, and Kim Mowery, BSESS '96 DMD '01, helps support advances in research that lead to significant discoveries in human wellness. This year's recipients included APK's Julia Choi, Ph.D., and Stephen Coombes, Ph.D. and HEB's Amy Mobley, Ph.D.

Julia Choi Receives Grant Funding
APK assistant professor Julia Choi, Ph.D., and a collaboration partner were awarded the Michael J. Fox Grant to study new generation DBS devices and brain recordings during natural walking and adaptations.

Assistant professor Ashley Smuder, Ph.D., will visit Dr. Brad Behnke’s lab at Kansas State with a student to learn a technique for her laboratory to measure vascular function using a pressure myograph system.

Howard Tietjen, professional with around 20 years of experience in the travel and tourism industry and a passion for new challenges has started his term as the adviory board chair this July. Read more.



Eric Friedheim Tourism Institute Student and Faculty Develop Rural Community's Resilience Post-Hurricane Through Home Sharing

Melody Xu and Lori Pennington-Gray, Ph.D., propose the use of vacation homes as disaster-relief tools post hurricane to assist locals in rural communities in Port St. Joe, FL. The project was conducted in collaboration with the UF College of Design, Construction and Planning and partially funded by the Eric Frieheim Tourism Institute. Read more.



Robert Lindsey makes Full Professor at Johnson C. Smith University
Robert Lindsey, Ph.D. '00, is an active member in NC Shape, Shape America, Phi Epsilon Kappa and the Beta Rho Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc located in Charlotte, NC. Currently, Dr. Lindsey serves as the President-Elect for the NCAAHE Organization in the state of North Carolina.



Ten Years=Ten Tons of Organic Vegetables Grown & Donated Food at Urban Gardens
Since 2010, HHP alum Ray Wunderlich III, BSHSE '86, and volunteers at WunderFarms have grown and donated to charity over 10 tons of vegetables using ecological/sustainable techniques. WunderFarms trains school groups and non profits to grow their own healthy food using sustainable techniques and teaches about food systems. Each year, Wunderlich's organization diverts almost 60,000 lbs of food scraps from the landfill.
