Neo Gebru's F31 NIH Application Scores an 11

Neo Gebru, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Health Education and Behavior, recieved a score of 11 in the F31 grant application through the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), part fo the NIH. Impact scores range from 10 to 90, where 10 is best. Generally, impact priority scores below 30 are the most likely to be funded. The purpose of F31 grants is to enable promising predoctoral students with potential to develop into a productive, independent research scientists and to obtain mentored research training while conducting dissertation research. This proposal seeks to use behavioral measures to assess changes in HIV sexual risk-taking following Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake in heavy drinking young men.

Kathleen Hupfeld authors article on the 'Power of Music' – Benefits of Music for the Aging Brain

Kathleen Hupfeld, a doctoral student in the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinsesiology, recently authored an article in the spring issue of the "New Horizon News" for the New Horizons International Music Association. Kathleen Hupfeld receives AAW Madelyn Lockhart Dissertation Fellowship

This spring, Kathleen Hupfeld, a doctoral student in the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinsesiology was awarded the Madelyn Lockhart Dissertation Fellowship by the Association for Academic Women (AAW). The award honors on Ph.D. candidate annually who is both an outstanding researcher and who has contributed to creating a more inclusive and diverse community. Ph.D. Student Tyler James receives R36 Grant from the Agnecy for Healthcare Research and Quality

Tyler G. James, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Health Education and Behavior, has been awarded an R36 Health Services Research Dissertation Award through the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The dissertation award will fund a one-and-a-half year-long mixed methods study to develop a conceptual model of emergency department use among deaf and hard-of-hearing patients. Read more in HEB News >>

UF Tourism Analytics group wins “Best Insights” Prize

The group — Dr. Andrei Kirilenko and Ph.D. candidates Shihan (David) Ma and Lijuan Su — are with the Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management and were competing in the Expedia X ENTER2020 Data Science Competition. The goal of the project was to understand how tourism contributes to social inclusion and social responsibility in the US. The group won the highest prize of the event. Read more at uftourism.org

Melody (Yu-Hua) Xu receives Great Teaching Certificate

Melody (Yu-Hua) Xu, PhD candidate in the department of Tourism, Hospitality & Event Management received her Great Teaching Certificate for completing the course taught by the UF Center for Teaching Excellence. The training covers teaching techniques that explore student involvement, active learning, student assessment and inclusivity to marginalized groups. “It opened my eyes to see teaching is not just delivering the course, but having good communication, taking care of your students, being innovative, and making the class a good experience” says Melody.
