Biography

Douglas DeMichele, Ed.D. (Associate Chair for Undergraduate Programs) is a faculty member in the Department of Sport Management at the University of Florida and has been teaching in the areas of facility management and design, leadership, special events, programming, campus recreation, and professional development (field experience and internships) since 2001. He mentors more than 250 undergraduate sport management students each year and approves all internships for undergraduate majors.

Prior to joining the faculty full-time in 2004, DeMichele’s responsibilities included serving as the Associate Director of Recreational Sports (Programs) at the University of Florida, where he was responsible for 800 student employees. This administrative role required the oversight of $1.2 million budget and all administrative responsibilities to ensure the delivery of a comprehensive Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs and Fitness Program. He was also instrumental in the planning and construction phases of three different multi-million dollar recreation centers and field projects located on the UF campus.

DeMichele was recognized as the HHP Teacher of the Year on two occasions (in 2005-2006 and then again in 2009-2010) and in 2015 was promoted from a Senior Lecturer to Master Lecturer. In addition to teaching and serving as the as the Associate Chair, Undergraduate Coordinator and Internship Coordinator, he has remained an active member on several College and University Committees, including, Undergraduate Curriculum, Administrative Council, SLO Assessment, and the Professional Sports Panel. He also has written two books: Softball Everyone and 21st Century Dad. Beyond the campus, DeMichele is very active in the community as a youth coach and church volunteer.

  • The construction/renovation and development of commercial, private and public recreation and athletic facilities
  • The approaches to facility design necessary to meet the needs and interests of casual and serious participants, elite athletes and spectators
  • Leadership and administration, and how leaders in the professions of Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management create opportunities for personal growth and professional advancement
