Where Science Meets Human Performance
Build a strong foundation in science and health.
The Department of Applied Physiology & Kinesiology (APK) prepares students to understand how the human body moves, adapts, and performs across the lifespan. This multidisciplinary program incorporates medicine, the life sciences and their application to clinical, healthy and athletic populations.
Our departmental mission is to use the core study of movement and physiology to understand human health, prevent and treat diseases, and train the next generation of healthcare leaders for tracks in medicine, nursing, dentistry, rehabilitation and health sciences, as well as leaders of fitness, wellness and exercise industries.
Applied Physiology & Kinesiology is a natural home for students pursuing medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant studies, dentistry, nursing, athletic training, and other health professions. Coursework is grounded in rigorous science, including anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, motor learning, and exercise physiology. Students graduate with the academic preparation and critical thinking skills professional schools expect.
- Hands-on laboratory experiences that mirror clinical environments
- Faculty-mentored research opportunities
- Internships and experiential learning in health and performance settings
- Advising tailored specifically for pre health goals
Applied Physiology & Kinesiology distinguishes itself through a combination of excellence, access, and outcomes.
- Ranked #1 among Kinesiology & Exercise Science programs in the U.S.
- Smaller class/lab sections for meaningful, hands-on learning
- APK applicants achieve a 46% admission rate to medical school and a 47% acceptance rate to PT programs
- APK enrollment has grown nearly 56% since 2014: a clear sign of rising interest, strong student outcomes, and the program’s expanding reputation, matched by nearly 60% increase in faculty to maintain an exceptional student experience
Applied Physiology & Kinesiology graduates are competitive applicants to medical and health professional schools and pursue careers across health care, research, corporate wellness, and performance settings. The department’s strong academic preparation, combined with real-world experience, positions students to move confidently into the next step of their professional journey. Explore each degree pathway to learn more about alumni outcomes and see where an education in Applied Physiology & Kinesiology can take you.
Applied Physiology & Kinesiology students learn from faculty who are researchers, clinicians, and leaders in human performance, rehabilitation science, cardiovascular health, neuromuscular physiology, and more. Undergraduate and graduate students alike have opportunities to contribute to meaningful research that improves lives and advances health outcomes.
Teaching and research labs give students practical experience with the same tools and technology used in clinical and performance settings.
All undergraduate Applied Physiology & Kinesiology students complete 12 credit hours of internship, built into the degree, as a capstone experience.
You do not just study science here. You practice it.
