Brianna Blassneck Offering Students Hands-on Learning Opportunities

For HFT4517 – Convention Sales and Services, the students complete two mock site-visits at event venues. For the residential students we have a lot of local support with suppliers, with the UFO students they are given agency to choose their venues.

This class is chiefly concerned about events from a venue perspective, so these assignments allow the students to witness a sales pitch in action and analyze the various characteristics of the property. Since they are touring the venue from the client’s perspective, it is a nice role-reversal to critically analyze this interaction between vendor and client. The students can compare what they’ve learned and what they’ve witnessed first-hand and assess if this is an appropriate venue for their event. Added bonus, they are making more connections in industry!

Hear from the students themselves...

“I believe that the site visits will be one of the most important things I learned from the course. Getting comfortable asking questions, communicating, and networking is important…relationships are important everywhere.”

“The discussions we had about meeting with hotels to set up conferences as well as the site visits really helped. Being able to interact with someone currently in the industry was beneficial.”

“I especially enjoyed the site visits as that gave real world experience.”

“The assignments in the class were very intentional and left me feeling more prepared for my future in the industry after college.”

“I have loved touring hotels and facilities to make events happen.”

“I learned hands-on with professionals already in the industry.”

Marlee Tobik

I am General Business Major specializing in Event Management graduating in 2025.

I am a balloon designer for a local business as well as with my mom's company Stacey Tobik Designs which does wooden party backdrops. I started doing this for school events and then started into customers. I love how you get to help bring together people's events and their visions (and how can you be upset around balloons?!).

Helen Abernethy

I am majoring in Advertising and minoring in Event Management, but my heart is with event management.

Over the course of my college career, I have planned 4 weddings and have loved every second of each one. In this picture, I am standing with the bride to be on her big day. I was the wedding planner and wedding coordinator for this event last month and I ran the wedding independently.

Chris Adair

I am a third-year Business Administration major with a specialization in Event Management.

Every year, we do a philanthropy for our fraternity known as Pike Halftime, and I have the privilege of helping run the event, serving as Philanthropy Chair. All the proceeds go to an organization known as CHOMP Cancer, which was founded by one of our alumni. My job is to organize sponsorships, assist in the Dream Girl competition, and run our social media page before and during the event. Last year, we raised $35,000 for the event!
