The Group Exercise/ Wellness Graduate Assistant is responsible for collaborating with the Program Director with the training, supervision, and evaluation of the group exercise leaders and the wellness center staff, as well as special event management for the Oak Hammock Fitness Center. The main responsibilities include assisting in the supervision the Fitness Centers staff, improving group exercise leader job performance, enhancing participant satisfaction in the group exercise and wellness areas, and performing organizational tasks relating to the group exercise and wellness staff. All Division Graduate Assistants must maintain the minimum academic GPA. This position reports to the Program Director.
Enrollment in the College of Health and Human Performance is required. Experience in the area of Fitness/Wellness, excellent leadership, fitness training skills, and basic exercise testing is highly recommended. University of Florida, ACSM, AFAA and/or ACE group exercise leader certification preferred.
- Oversee the daily operation of the group exercise and wellness program.
- Select, train, supervise, and evaluate the group exercise leaders and wellness staff; assist in the supervision of fitness centers staff.
- Develop fitness and wellness programs.
- Schedule group exercise leaders to ensure coverage of a variety of class formats.
- Develop and implement continuing education for group exercise and wellness staff.
- Coordinate special events to promote the group exercise and wellness program and the Oak Hammock Fitness Center and the College of Health and Human Performance.
- Submit detailed monthly reports.
- Update training and procedures manuals.
- Assist in the budgeting and tracking of supplies and equipment.
- Inspect the group exercise and wellness areas and all equipment to ensure cleanliness and safety; replenish first aid kits.
- Instruct group exercise sessions in a variety of formats, such as step, sports conditioning, low-impact, strength training, circuit, and water. Be able to perform fitness assessments such as sub maximal bike test, skin fold, sit and reach assessments, etc.
- Review risk management and emergency procedures established by the College of Health and Human Performance.
- Complete other assignments as deemed necessary by the Program Director or the Program Assistan
- Maintain current certification in group exercise, adult CPR, AED and First Aid.
- Represent the Oak Hammock Fitness Center and the College of Health and Human Performance in a professional manner through appearance, attitude, and cooperation with patrons and peers.
- Assist in developing annual budget recommendations, fee rates, and statistical reports.
- Maintain, or acquire within the first year, professional certifications.
- Attend all staff meetings and trainings.
- Represent the Oak Hammock Fitness Center and the College of Health and Human Performance on an as-needed basis.
