PH.D. STUDENT NAMED DOCTORAL FELLOW | 10/08

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Tavis Glassman was selected as the first Doctoral Fellow of the Addictive and Health Behaviors Research Institute.

Glassman, who serves as the Coordinator for Alcohol & Other Drug Prevention for the University of Florida, is a second-year Ph.D. student in the College of Health & Human Performance with a concentration in health behavior.

Dr. Chudley Werch, Founding Director of the Institute, said Glassman’s interest in AHBRI’s research made Glassman qualified for the honor.

“Strong interest and desire go a long way in ensuring success, and Tavis displayed this when I started to talk with him about our research,” Werch said.

Werch said Glassman will conduct a systematic review of successful measures of behavioral and theory-based mediating factors from the substance abuse prevention intervention literature, a factor analysis of an alcohol consumption self-control measure for adolescents, and an examination of the role of self-control patterns and alcohol use among adolescents.

Glassman said there is a link between his professional work at UF and AHBRI’s goals.

“I am concerned with this issue because substance abuse is the leading cause of death for young people,” Glassman said.

As a Doctoral Fellow, Glassman will be listed on all Institute and Web-based communications for the 2004-05 school year. He will receive a $500 stipend for conducting collaborative research with others in the Institute.

“I am honored to serve as a Doctoral Fellow for the Addictive and Health Behaviors Research Institute,” Glassman said. “I look forward to learning a great deal and to contributing to the Institute’s mission.”
