HHP Student Experience Survey
As part of our ongoing efforts to strive for excellence in the College, we are asking that you complete a survey and provide information about your experience as a student at the University of Florida College of Health and Human Performance. We hope to gain a greater understanding of campus climate for all students. Results will also help HHP administrators and faculty identify and assess priorities for student programs and services. Responses are anonymous. HHP 2017 Scholarship Application Open
The college awards over $36,000 in scholarships annually, in amounts ranging from $500 to $2000. All HHP students who have completed a minimum of 1 semester in HHP are eligible to apply if you meet the minimum GPA requirements (3.0 UF gpa or higher). Students can apply for up to three scholarships (with a maximum of one award per student). For application and eligibility information please visit http://hhp.ufl.edu/index.php/current-students/scholarships/.

Qualifications vary by scholarship (major/department specific or students interested in leadership, service, etc.), so please review the criteria carefully before applying. The 2017 scholarship application and supporting materials must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 8, 2017. Late and/or incomplete applications will not be considered.

2017-2018 University Scholars Application Open
The University Scholars Program presents University of Florida undergraduates with the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors while pursuing fundamental research, exploring scholarly inquiry, and developing new knowledge. University Scholars will receive a $1750 research stipend. Faculty mentors will receive $500. Scholars also have the opportunity to publish their work in UF’s on-line Journal of Undergraduate Research, and will present their research in the University Scholars Symposium.

Applicants must have at least one more year of undergraduate studies remaining and an overall GPA of 3.00 or better. To be eligible, you must not earn your bachelor’s degree before spring 2018. For the 2017-2018 competition, the student can conduct the research during summer and fall 2017 as well as spring 2018. Selected students must register for 0-5 credit hours of Undergraduate Research during Summer A/C, fall 2017 and spring 2018.

Spring 2017 Graduation Application Deadline *Friday*
The deadline to apply for Spring 2016 graduation is Friday, January 27, 2017. Spring graduates must complete an online degree application in ONE.UF by this deadline. (Under the section entitled “My Record”, select “Certification/Degree Application”)

Academic Advising Hours/Availability
If you need to speak with an HHP academic advisor, please view each department’s advising availability online here. Advisors have both appointments and walk-in advising during any given week. Appointments must be scheduled 24 hours in advance.

When you visit the advising office, please sign in using the kiosk system (sign in using your gatorlink & password). If you have a form that needs a signature, you can leave it with the advisor’s assistant if you do not want to wait for an advisor.


TRSM Summer A 2017 Study Abroad Programs Info Session *Monday*
TRSM is offering three interdisciplinary study abroad programs with a focus on sustainability. For more information, please attend the information session on Monday, January 30th from 5:00-7:00 in FLG 235.

North Queensland, AustraliaLEI 4955/LEI 6931 (6 credits) May 13th-June 11th, 2017. Field-based course including two research days on the Great Barrier Reef, live with an Australian farm family and study rural life, spend two nights in the Outback experiencing “life off the grid”, take part in a service learning project on an Aboriginal owned ranch, and finish the program exploring Sydney.

Fiji – LEI 4955/6931 – (3 credits) June 11th-20th 2017.  Field-based course with three days working on an ecotourism project on Barefoot Island in the Yasawas, experience life in a traditional Fijian village, and visits to the Nadi craft markets. This program can be taken by itself for 3 credits or may be added to the North Queensland program for a total of 9 credits.

New Zealand – LEI 4955/6931 (6 credits) May 26th -June 21st , 2017.  Field-based course with a focus on sustainability and natural resource management across the South and the North islands of New Zealand.  Learn about eco-tourism in Kaikoura and swim with dolphins, experience adventure tourism in Queenstown, learn about Maori culture, and visit Hobbiton and learn about movie related tourism

HHP Internship & Job Fair: Feb 22 *Updated*
Are you looking for your final semester internship experience? Seeking summer work/volunteer experience? Join us on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 from 10:00am to 2:00pm on the Florida Gym for the HHP Internship & Job Fair. Employers will be on hand recruiting HHP students for internships. Professional business dress is required. Sites are still registering, be sure to check next week’s newsletter for a list of site confirmations.  Site registration is open through mid-February, however interested students can view a list of registered sites by clicking here.

2017 Collegiate Sports Sustainability Summit (CS3)
UF is hosting the 2017 Collegiate Sports Sustainability Summit (CS3) on February 15-17, 2017. This year’s CS3, co-hosted by the EPA and the University of Florida, offers attendees the chance to network, learn, and exchange ideas with peers from around the country on ways in which athletic and sports programs can join the campus movement to engage students, fans, and alumni in making collegiate sports socially, economically, and environmentally responsible. The summit offers engaging speakers, collaborative round table discussions, and breakout sessions that allow participants to dive deeper into topics regarding sustainability.

Who should attend: Faculty, staff, students, or professionals researching or involved with: collegiate athletics, recreational sports, campus sustainability, recycling and waste reduction, facility management, food service, behavior change, marketing and communications, psychology, social sustainability, or fan engagement.  For more information or to register for this event, please visit cs3.sustainable.ufl.edu

Volunteer Opportunities: Gainesville Sports Commission
The Gainesville Sports Commission spring semester is underway and our first event is the FHSAA Competitive Cheerleading State Championships on the 28th and 29th of January. We need volunteers on both days of the event.

If you cannot make this event and are still interested in volunteering, our next event is the Five Points of Lift Marathon at the end of February.

The Five Points of Life Marathon will be held on Sun, Feb 26, 2017. We are in need of volunteer to help accommodate for all different scheduled shift times for course monitors. The shift start times vary from 6:45am to 1:00pm

The marathon itself includes a Half Marathon and Marathon Relay that will take place around the Gainesville area. The little over 25 mile stretch starts at Hull Road and includes several major routes around the Gainesville area, including 34th Street, 16th Avenue, Williston Road, and roads and streets around the University of Florida campus. We ask that volunteers bring whatever they can to keep them going; this includes chairs, music, signs to encourage the runners, etc. This event is great way to receive service hours for a club or class while simultaneously spreading awareness of life saving donations.

APS Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship Applications
APS is pleased to offer five undergraduate summer research fellowship programs in 2017. Applications are open now; deadline is February 1, 2017 (February 15 for STEP-UP). Please follow the links below to find more information about each program and feel free to share this announcement with others!

2017 University Women’s Club Undergraduate Scholarships *New*
The University Women’s Club is an organization comprised of faculty/staff and wives of faculty and staff of the University of Florida. Each spring, the University Women’s Club awards $1,000 scholarships to deserving students in honor of past presidents of UF as well as wives of distinguished campus leaders. The University Women’s Club awards up to 17 scholarships to junior or senior undergraduate men and women. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.6 and have demonstrated service to the university and/or community.

The application DEADLINE is March 3, 2017. The general application form and requirements can be found at: https://www.dso.ufl.edu/home/scholarships/uwc.

The Rita O’Connell Scholarship is also selected by the UWC. These awards ($1,000) are given to students who have achieved success as students
while persevering through physical or cognitive disabilities. There aren’t specific GPA requirements, but the application process must be followed.

Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP)
This 6-wk summer program is free and aims to expand horizons for racially, ethnically, and/or economically/educationally disadvantaged freshman and sophomore US citizens, permanent residents, or with DACA status, and a minimum 2.5 GPA. The program is designed to academically enrich, provide exposure to the various healthcare professions, and facilitate career development opportunities in the early formative college years.

Interested qualified students with interest in any of the healthcare professions – medicine/PA, nursing, pharmacy, public health and other health professions (PT, OT, etc), dental, vet med – should be encouraged to apply.

Applications are open now.  The national website at www.shpep.org provides necessary details and is the location where students should be sent to read more and apply.  Applicants are asked to select and prioritize (3) schools of interest.  Early Application Deadline is Feb 1 and Final Application Deadline Mar 1.

The University of Florida has all (6) Health Science Colleges participating and may be the only school with Veterinary Medicine and PA Medicine representation.  SHPEP dates at UF will be May 22 – June 30, 2017.

Health and Wellness Scholarship from UF Health
The annual $500 Gareth Kerr Memorial Scholarship Award recognizes students that consistently support campus and community health programs and/or work diligently to promote a cause related to health and wellness.

Open to full-time undergraduate and graduate students in good standing with UF (GPA of 3.0 or above), award nominees must demonstrate a special commitment to a health-related cause and/or have made a significant contribution that benefits students and/or the community in a health-related area.

Volunteer Opportunity: 2017 Swamp Challenge *New*
The 2017 Swamp Challenge is looking for volunteers on April 22 to help with the most epic fitness event in town!  The Swamp Challenge is a 1-day fitness competition throughout Ben Hill Griffin Stadium where athletes can chose to participate in the Adventure Race, Kids Obstacle Course or Fitness Competition.  Check out this video from last year’s competition to give you an idea of what you’re getting into https://www.facebook.com/swampchallenge/videos/1813702255513352/

Sex in the Swamp 2017: Condom Accessory Design Challenge
Presented by the Student Health Care Center & the Alpha Lambda Chapter of Eta Sigma Gamma at UF.
Grab a friend, get creative and transform condoms into the next must-have accessory! As part of its Sex in the Swamp event on Feb. 23rd, the Alpha Lamba Chapter of Eta Sigma Gamma is hosting a condom accessory design challenge. Each winning team member will receive a Fitbit Flex Wireless Activity + Sleep Wristband!
