Biography:
Robert M. Weiler, Ph.D., holds a bachelor’s degree from Marshall University, a master of public health degree from the University of Tennessee and a doctor of philosophy degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. From 1984-1987, he served as Coordinator of School Health Education for the Cumberland County (North Carolina) schools, and from 1991-1993 he was appointed Visiting Assistant Professor of Human Services at George Mason University.
In 1993, Weiler joined the faculty in the Department of Health Education & Behavior at the University of Florida. He was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 1998 and again promoted to full professor in 2005. From 2003 to 2007 he served as the chair of the department.
Weiler’s research interests include adolescent risk behaviors, school health programs, substance abuse prevention with emphasis on prescription drugs and survey research and evaluation. He has published some 35 papers in professional journals such as Journal of Adolescent Health, Journal of Drug Education, Public Health Reports, Health Education & Behavior, and American Journal of Health Behavior, and the Journal of School Health. Moreover, he has presented more than 70 papers at international and national scientific meetings. He has served as co-investigator/evaluator on three NIH grants and as principal investigator on numerous state and private contracts. In May 2004, he co-founded the Addictive and Health Behaviors Research Institute at the University of Florida. Weiler’s professional affiliations include American Academy of Health Behavior, American Public Health Association, The Society for Public Health Education and the American School Health Association. He is a Fellow of the American School Health Association, and in April 2002, Weiler received a University of Florida Research Foundation Professorship.
