Biography:

John O. Spengler, Ph.D., is an associate professor and graduate coordinator in the Department of Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management at the University of Florida. Spengler teaches and conducts research in law, risk management and safety in sport, physical activity and health promotion.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has funded his research on physical activity and obesity prevention through an Active Living Research grant and on legal issues relevant to health promotion in the school setting through a commissioned paper. He also has received funding from the American Heart Association to conduct research on the use of, and constraints to implementing, automated external defibrillators in sport and recreation programs.

He is an author of four textbooks (one to be published Fall 2008), and two book chapters, on the subject of law, safety and risk management in sport. He has published numerous articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals.

Spengler is a Fellow with the Research Consortium of the AAHPERD and Chair of the Safety and Risk Management Council. He also has received several teaching awards, including the 2002 CHHP “Teacher of the Year” award, and was named “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” twice. More recently, he was honored with the SRMC Distinguished Scholar Award from AAHPERD.

  • • Content analysis of statutory and case law relevant to sport and physical activity
  • • The application of risk management principles to the sport industry
  • • Analysis of joint use agreements, tort immunity legislation and perception of liability risk in the context of community use of schools for physical activity
  • • Health promotion and obesity prevention in the context of sport
