Biography:

Dr. Morgan Pigg, Jr. holds B.S. and M.Ed. degrees from Middle Tennessee State University, and H.S.D. and M.P.H. degrees from Indiana University.  He previously held faculty positions at Western Kentucky University, the University of Georgia, and at Indiana University where he served as Director of Graduate Studies from 1981-1987.  Dr. Pigg joined the University of Florida faculty in 1987.  He served as Chair for the Department of Health Education and Behavior from 1987-1996, and from 2007-2008.  He served as the Department’s Graduate Program Coordinator from 2001-2006, and again since 2011.  He also works as a staff writer for the Communications Office in the College of Health and Human Performance at the University of Florida.

Dr.Pigg's professional specializations include child and adolescent health, philosophy and ethics, professional preparation, and scientific writing.  His personal interests include occupational stress and burnout; implications of Health Behavior Genomics for research and practice in Health Education; and effects of the “entertainment culture” on the civic, social, and character development of young people.

Dr. Pigg currently teaches HSC 3032 - Foundations of Health Education, HSC 5956 – Writing for Professional Publications, and HSC 6037 – Philosophy and Principles of Health Education.  He enjoys teaching and mentoring, working with undergraduate and graduate students, and pursuing his professional interests.

Dr. Pigg holds lifetime memberships in the American Association for Health Education, American School Health Association, and Eta Sigma Gamma, the national Health Education honorary organization.  He served for 20 years as Editor for the Journal of School Health, published since 1930 by the American School Health Association.  Recognitions received include the Willard W. Patty Distinguished Alumnus Award from Indiana University; the National Honor Award from Eta Sigma Gamma; and the William A. Howe Award from the American School Health Association.  In 1999, Dr. Pigg was selected as Teacher of the Year for the University of Florida.

Dr. Pigg grew up in Fayetteville, Tennessee.  He was the first person in his family to attend college.  He volunteered for service in the U.S. Army from 1970-1972.  He enjoys studying all aspects of World War 2.  Dr. Pigg and his wife, Nancy, live with their 2 children in Gainesville, Florida.  Their family attends the University City Church of Christ in Gainesville.
