Biography:

Dan Connaughton, Ed. D., is an associate professor in the Department of Tourism, Recreation and Sport Management at the University of Florida. He has held management positions in campus and public recreation departments, aquatic facilities, and health/fitness programs. At UF, Connaughton conducts research and teaches in the area of sport law and risk management.

The American Heart Association has funded his research on the use of, and constraints to implementing, automated external defibrillators in sport and recreation programs. He is currently the Principal Investigator of a grant, funded by the Florida Department of Transportation, which is designed to reduce injuries and deaths to youth by promoting bicycle and pedestrian safety education.

Connaughton is a Fellow with the Research Consortium of the AAHPERD and has received several teaching and research awards. He holds numerous professional certifications including, but not limited to, ACSM Health/Fitness Instructor, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, ASEP Coaching Instructor, LAB Cycling Instructor, Emergency Medical Technician, and several water-safety certifications. Connaughton frequently serves as a consultant on sport law and related risk management matters.

Research Interests:  

  • • The legal issues associated with the sport industry including the youth, amateur, recreational, interscholastic, collegiate, professional, and international levels
  • • The application of legal precedence (case law) and statutes to the sport industry
  • • The study of risk management practices, particularly (1) the awareness of, and adherence to, relevant statutes, standards and guidelines, (2) the development and implementation of risk management policies and procedures, and (3) safety and injury prevention measures taken to reduce injuries and deaths, the root cause of most sport-related negligence lawsuits
