Biography:
J. Don Chaney has a Master of Science in Health Education and Promotion from Mississippi State University, a Ph.D. in Health Education and Promotion from The University of Alabama, and is a Certified Health Education Specialist. In 2009, Chaney was named the Assistant Dean for Distance Education and Outreach in the College of Health and Human Performance. Prior to this Dr. Chaney has held faculty appointments at East Carolina University (ECU), Texas A&M University (TAMU), and The University of Alabama (UA).
Chaney's research interests include the design of distance and continuing education courseware, the use of technological applications in health education and promotion, and worksite health promotion. He has numerous publications and has conducted over 80 research presentations in these areas. While at TAMU, he developed and directed the Office of Health Informatics which generated approximately 3 million dollars in revenue over his 4 year supervision. He has also served as Co-Director of the ECU Worksite Health Promotion program, Director of the Laboratory for Distance Education Research at ECU, and as Coordinator of The University of Alabama Master of Arts Program in Health Studies.
Chaney is an active member of the American Association for Health Education (AAHE), American Public Health Association (APHA), Eta Sigma Gamma (ESG), and Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) profession. He was elected to, and served as a member of the AAHE Board of Directors from 2007-2009. He has been actively in numerous AAHE and the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) committees and endeavors. He currently serves as the director of the AAHE Health Education and Promotion (HEP) Distance Education Network.
Chaney is the past Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Health Studies. He also served in Guest Editor/Co-Editor roles for the The Health Education Monograph, the International Electronic Journal of Health Education, and the American Journal of Health Studies. He currently serves as a reviewer for the American Journal of Health Education, the International Electronic Journal of Health Education, the American Journal of Health Studies, and Health Promotion Practice.
Chaney has been recognize for his work as the recipient of the 2003 AAHE/HEDIR Technology Award, the 2004 AAHE Horizon Award, the 2005 The University of Alabama Jack Davis Professional Achievement Award, and was awarded a 2007 AAHE Presidential Citation.
