Dr. Jane Garland from the University of Western Ontario will vist APK on March 31, 2006. Her primary research focus is to understand the mechanisms whereby the nervous system controls force production in human skeletal muscle. There are two main foci for her research: 1) the study of the neural control of force production under conditions of muscle fatigue; 2) postural control and recovery following stroke. Thus, She performs both fundamental physiological studies of motor control as well as clinically-applied studies. Specifically, she studies human motor unit behaviour to reveal the neural adaptations and compensations that may result from muscle fatigue. Her clinical research interests are in the study of balance and movement disorders in patients recovering from stroke. Both of these avenues of research contribute to the understanding of motor control in normal subjects and in patients coping with sensorimotor deficits.
