The Fitness/Wellness curriculum emphasizes the short and long term effects of exercise in both health and disease. This field is the basis for understanding the physiological bases of exercise in disease prevention and the role of exercise in rehabilitation from disease. Students are taught the concepts of strength and conditioning for populations from exercise participant through elite athlete, as well as exercise prescription for healthy and diseased populations.
Upon receiving a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology with a specialization in Fitness/Wellness, graduates are prepared for employment in corporate, private, hospital-based or state agency wellness, exercise or rehabilitation facilities, or fitness programming organizations. In addition, graduates in the APK Fitness/Wellness specialization are prepared for graduate school in exercise physiology and human performance, as well as graduate study or professional programs in health-related fields, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, medicine, physician’s assistant, nursing, etc.
