Stephen Dodd, Ph.D., came to the University of Florida as an associate professor in 1991 and started the Muscle Physiology Lab in 1992. The focus of the lab has been the study of how muscle adapts to increased and decreased use. The lab has been funded by grants from agencies such as NASA, the American Heart Association and Ipsen Pharmaceuticals. Dodd has been active in professional organizations such as the American Physiological Society and the American College of Sports Medicine. In addition, he has served as a reviewer for numerous scholarly journals and several scientific granting agencies.
Dodd’s lab is currently focused on: 1) determining the signaling pathways that control protein degradation during disuse atrophy; 2) determining the role of heat shock proteins in attenuating skeletal muscle atrophy; and 3) determining the role of oxidative stress in initiating protein degradation during intermittent ischemia in muscle.
